Among the most influential feminist artists working today, Mary Kelly first came to prominence in 1976 with her epic series, Post Partum Document. This work, exploring the artist s relationship with her infant over the course of six years through a combination of texts, images and found objects, was to prove pivotal not only to the development of Conceptual Art, but also to twentieth-century feminism. Kelly often deploys prevailing literary or scientific genres, ranging from romantic fiction to types of psychoanalytical and medical diagnosis which define woman as ‘other . Her richly textured narratives and images have received international attention for over twenty years and were the subject of a major US museum tour in 1997–8.
